Lateral Police Officer
If you are currently employed as a peace officer in a California-authorized jurisdiction with one year of full-time experience, or have been so employed within the past two years; and possess or are eligible to possess a California POST Basic Certificate issued by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), you qualify as a Lateral candidate.
Reserve Officer time is not considered qualifying as a lateral. Lateral Police Officers may be appointed up to the top step in the salary range commensurate with experience, education, training and POST certificates.
Academy Attendee & Graduate
Academy attendees/graduates are applicants who are currently attending or have graduated from a California POST-approved Basic Police Academy within the last two years. Candidates for this position are typically appointed as a Police Officer at the first step in the salary range.
Requalification or Basic Course Waiver
A California POST Requalification Course Certification or a Basic Course Waiver issued within the last two years are also qualifying.
