John Sawyer Candidate Statement
I am running for City Council to continue providing our community with a strong voice focusing on the important issues facing Santa Rosa. Key priorities include: Fire recovery and supporting housing production at all levels, especially in our downtown where higher density transit-oriented projects are key to create a 24-hour experience in the heart of downtown while reducing our reliance on automobiles. I’m also committed to preserving strong public safety services, investing in our neighborhood streets & parks, protecting our environment and advancing the Southeast Greenway plans. Santa Rosa continues to grapple with the issue of homelessness. We must sustain supportive services and continue working to house more of our most vulnerable residents.
As a fourth generation, lifelong Santa Rosan, 35-year business owner of Sawyer’s News in downtown Santa Rosa and a two-time Mayor, I bring to the table proven experience, leadership and a consistent voice of reason that Santa Rosa can depend on in the years ahead. I know what it takes to build consensus and move our city forward in a collaborative spirit. My record speaks for itself. During my tenure as Mayor of Santa Rosa from 2014 through 2016, I helped move our City Council past a period of polarization and bring the City Council together to address our most pressing issues. By moving beyond the divisions of the past, we worked together to establish a Housing First policy to address homelessness, realized a long-held vision of reunifying Courthouse Square, made the Roseland annexation plans a reality, supported new housing to chip away at our housing crisis and enacted policies to retain a strong economy & employment market.
Beyond the progress made on the City Council over the last four years, my commitment and service to our community runs deep. I currently serve as the City Council’s appointee and immediate past chairman to the Sonoma County Waste Management Agency. In addition, the Mayor appointed me to the City’s Long-Term Financial Planning and Audit Subcommittee, the City’s Cannabis Subcommittee and the Downtown Subcommittee. For decades, I have been actively involved in our community by serving on the Boards of local non-profit organizations including service as: Current Chairman of the Board–Santa Rosa Community Health, former Vice Chairman–Sonoma County Transportation Authority, former Chairman–Neighborhood Oriented Policing Citizen’s Advisory Board, former Board Chairman–Sonoma County Cultural Arts Council and the former Board Chairman–Luther Burbank Home and Garden Association, to name a few.
