The first Green Bike Lane in Santa Rosa was installed in 2016 at the intersection of Santa Rosa Avenue and Third Street, where Santa Rosa Avenue meets Courthouse Square.
What are Green Bike Lanes?
Green Bike Lanes are colored pavement markings placed near or through an intersection acting as a supplement to the white dashed bike lane extensions. The purpose of the Green Bike Lane markings is to enhance the transition point and bring awareness to the locations where bicycle and vehicle paths may cross.
Why the Increase in Green Bike Lane Applications?
In 2017, the City of Santa Rosa increased the number of Green Bike Lane pavement applications due in large part to recent improvements to the application process. The thermoplastic pavement markings are now available in pre-formed colored stencils. The stencils are adhered to the pavement with an epoxy glue then an infrared heater seals the stencil in place. As the new process is less expensive and can be applied in less time than the previous method, plans are in place to install additional Green Bike Lanes within the city.
