Self and Community Care as an Act of Resistance

On May 19, 2021, Dr. Daniela Dominguez, Assistant Professor at the University of San Francisco and Chief Executive Officer of On the Margins, LLC, provided the CAB with a presentation on caring for the self, mentally and physically, while engaged in community work. As poet Audre Lorde once said, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self- preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” Sonoma County has experienced multiple traumatic events pre and during COVID. One thing has become clear, we need each other to survive and thrive. Inspired by the Audre Lorde Project, this presentation will explain how naming our trauma and needs is a radical act of self and community love. This presentation will offer strategies for grounding, transformation, and accountability. This presentation will introduce the importance of creating a wellness plan to meet self and community needs.

Dr. Daniela Domínguez is an Assistant Professor at the University of San Francisco and the Chief Executive Officer at On the Margins, LLC. She is a licensed psychologist and professional clinical counselor with a special interest in liberation psychology, anti-racism, migrant justice, and gender and sexuality matters. Previously, her program of research has focused on understanding how Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) cope with stress and use specific strategies to draw upon resiliencies to achieve positive health. In 2020, the Society of Counseling Psychologists honored her with the “Early Career Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Counseling Psychology.” In 2021, the Society of Counseling Psychologists honored her with the “Social Justice Award” for her demonstrated evidence of achieving community change that supports disenfranchised or oppressed groups.
