Legal Aid of Sonoma County

The City has contracted with Legal Aid of Sonoma County to provide income-qualifying tenants with housing stabilization assistance that includes, but is not limited to, tenant education, assistance with eviction defense, habitability issues, Section 8 advocacy, assisting tenants with housing issues related to Coronavirus, income-qualifying landlord counsel, and community outreach. Legal Aid addresses these legal issues through a variety of strategies including education, negotiations with landlords, drafting pleadings, and when needed, in court representation.

Eight outreach events will occur between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023 onsite at apartment buildings, health fairs or other events focused on serving Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) communities.

Sonoma County Secure Families Collaborative

Sonoma County Secure Families Collaborative partners with organizations throughout the Bay Area to assist the County’s 29,000 undocumented immigrants. The City has contracted with Secure Families Collaborative to place an attorney and bilingual case worker with Legal Aid to provide pro bono legal assistance to undocumented youth, particularly on attaining Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, which legalizes status within the United States. Services include the full scope of immigration legal services, including information and referral, counsel and advice, preparation of pleadings and immigration documents, and representation in administrative proceedings.

Outreach includes quarterly workshops to inform the community of this program, ideally in collaboration with partner organizations, and quarterly community outreach events, such as health fairs, BIPOC student fairs, and Latinx-focused events.

Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS

The Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS (HOPWA) program provides stable and permanent housing assistance and supportive services to the most vulnerable populations – low income persons living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) /Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The City has contracted with Face to Face to provide countywide comprehensive services such as case management, benefits counseling, short term rent/mortgage/utility assistance and housing placement assistance. who may face homelessness or other life and medical challenges, including mental health and substance abuse issues as well as discrimination and stigma that create barriers to needed services (authorized per the AIDS Housing Opportunity Act (42 U.S.C. 12901-12912)).

Fair Housing Advocates of Northern California

Fair Housing Advocates of Northern California (FHANC) provides free comprehensive fair housing counseling, complaint investigation, and assistance in filing housing discrimination complaints with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) or the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH).. The City has contracted with FHANC to provide comprehensive services such as complaint intake, enforcement, Fair Housing Law and Practice Seminars for housing providers, and advisory guidance on obligation to affirmatively furthering fair housing. FHANC is HUD certified to offer pre-purchase counseling and education programs, as well as foreclosure prevention counseling and workshops.
