Description of Project: Meter Made
The Public Art Program is selecting an artist to design and implement a permanent public art project in a streetscape location. This public art opportunity is for one artist or team of artists to create a large-scale sculpture using recycled parking meters. While other materials may be used in the sculpture, parking meters and/or components should be the primary material and noticeable to viewers.
Project Location
Sculpture will be sited at City of Santa Rosa Parking Lot 11, at:
540 5th Street
Santa Rosa, CA 95401
Project Budget
The maximum project budget is $14,000 and is inclusive of all artist fees, and all expenses related to design development, including engineering, fabrication, travel, transportation and installation of the artwork, insurance, and all other project related expenses. Finalists invited to submit specific proposals receive an honorarium of $300 for their efforts and materials for a maquette of their proposed project.
Background
The Public Art Program is pleased to work with the Parking Division in offering this opportunity. Over the years, the City of Santa Rosa has amassed a collection parking meters and meter parts that have been "retired" from active service from the Downtown parking district. Project goals include encouraging the creative reuse of parking meters, offering artists the opportunity to create artwork out of unusual materials, and enlivening a City parking lot with large-scale sculpture that will be experienced by pedestrians as well as those using the parking lot.
