Boat Rentals Closed and Boating Classes Canceled - 8/15 & 8/16


Blue Green Algae blooms were spotted in the waters near the boat dock at Lake Ralphine at Howarth Park on Friday, 8/14. As a precaution, boat rentals and boating classes at Lake Ralphine have been canceled for the weekend of Saturday, 8/15 and Sunday, 8/16. Please keep yourself and your pets safe by staying out of the water and following posted warnings.

Boat Rentals to Open 8/1 & 8/2, Be Aware of Blue Green Algae


A reminder as you venture out this weekend to our City parks, Blue Green Algae (BGA) is common in bodies of water at this time of year and can be toxic to people and pets. Boat rentals at Lake Ralphine at Howarth Park are expected to be open this weekend, 8/1 and 8/2 after a check of the water near the boat dock on Thursday, 7/30 did not find BGA blooms to be present. Please keep yourself and your pets safe by staying out of the water and following posted warnings.

Warning signage has been posted at all City parks with bodies of water following observation of Blue Green Algae (BGA) blooms near the boat dock at Lake Ralphine at Howarth Park on Wednesday, July 22. BGA is naturally present in lakes and streams and blooms, which are common at this time of year, and can become toxic to humans and pets. As a precaution, boat rentals at Lake Ralphine scheduled for this weekend, July 25 and 26, are canceled, however the boat dock will remain open for private use. Park guests should take care to protect themselves and their pets by staying out of the water and following these safety guidelines:

  • No Swimming
  • Do not let children or pets go into or drink the water, or go near scum
  • Stay away from algae on shore, isolated side pools, and scum
  • Do not drink water or use for cooking. Boiling or filtering water will not make it safe
  • For fish caught in the water, throw away guts and clean with bottled water before cooking
  • Call your doctor or veterinarian if you or your pet get sick after going in the water
