SANTA ROSA, CA - The California Department of Toxic Substance Control is expected to initiate the Phase 1 Household Hazardous Waste Sweeps next week for residential properties with damaged or destroyed structures from the Glass Fire in Sonoma County.
Phase 1 is mandatory for all residential properties identified in the State’s damage assessment report. Residents and owners can determine if their property will be included in the Phase 1 HHW sweeps by entering their address in the search bar on the following maps:
Property owners will also be able to use these maps to confirm when the household hazardous waste sweep has been completed on their properties.
Certified contractor crews will begin inspections of identified properties in the burn footprint and will remove materials that may pose a threat to human health, animals, and the environment such as batteries, asbestos siding, propane tanks and paints. Burned vehicle removal is not included in the hazardous household waste sweeps.
Local hazardous materials officials will be accompanying the state crews during Phase 1. The majority of properties should be cleared within the next two to three weeks, but full completion is dependent on the volume of hazardous materials and access to properties.
If property owners are aware of any obstacles that the contractor may have in accessing their properties such as a locked gate, burned access bridge, or other barrier, please contact the Sonoma County Hazardous Materials Unit at (707) 565-2024 or email HazMat@sonoma-county.org to help officials with coordinating access in advance.
Once Phase 1 sweeps have been completed, property owners must submit a completed application and receive approval to begin Phase 2 cleanup. Alternatively, a public state-sponsored Phase 2 debris removal program will also be available to eligible residential properties. Fire survivors are invited to learn about Phase 1 and Phase 2 Debris Removal, FEMA Disaster Assistance and post-fire watershed protection on Monday, Nov. 2 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. during a virtual Fire Recovery Town Hall hosted by the County of Sonoma and the City of Santa Rosa, in collaboration with state and federal partners.
The event will allow for residents to ask questions of subject matter experts from the Governor’s Office of Emergency Service, FEMA, the County of Sonoma and the City of Santa Rosa. Community members are encouraged to attend to get answers to their specific questions about the Debris Removal Program and other areas of recovery.
