[ARCHIVED] Fulton Road Reconstruction Project Awarded for Innovation and Sustainability

News Flash Fulton Road

The City of Santa Rosa’s Fulton Road Reconstruction project is the recipient of the 2020 Best Projects Award of Merit by the Engineering News-Record - California region, and the Infrastructure Project of the Year awarded by the American Concrete Institute – Northern California region.

The Fulton Road Reconstruction project, between Occidental Road and West Third Street, repaired approximately 3,200 linear feet of 4-lane pavement that supports a remarkable 25,000 vehicles per direction per day. This project also replaced a deteriorated storm drain pipe, installed a new sewer manhole and implemented ADA curb ramp upgrades.

The projects innovative design involved the installation of Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavement rather than traditional asphalt pavement. While only 2% of local governments currently use concrete pavement, this innovative technology is proving to be less costly, longer lasting and requiring less lifetime maintenance than asphalt pavement.

Positive environmental effects were also achieved as the concrete section recycled the existing base in-place eliminating the need to off-haul/landfill over 5,000 cubic yards of material, eliminating roughly 500 dump trucks and another 5,000 cubic yards or 500 trucks of virgin material.

In October 2019, when the Kincade fire broke out, Fulton Road was actively under construction. The City and crews halted construction and acted quickly to make this major North-South traffic corridor a drivable evacuation route for those evacuating the fire’s path.

Innovation, adaptability and sustainability were key to the short and long-term success of this project.

The Fulton Road Reconstruction - Occidental Road to West Third Street project was funded in part by Measure M sales tax and SB1 gas tax.
