SONOMA, MARIN WATER UTILITIES SEEK 20 PERCENT VOLUNTARY WATER USE REDUCTION

(Santa Rosa, CA) The Water Advisory Committee (WAC) to the Sonoma County Water Agency (Sonoma Water), which consists of representatives from eight public water utilities in Sonoma and Marin counties, passed a resolution Monday asking customers of the Sonoma-Marin Saving Water Partnership (Partnership) to voluntarily reduce water use by 20 percent due to the drought. The Partnership is a collaborative of the following utilities: the cities of Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, Petaluma, Sonoma, Cotati, Healdsburg; North Marin, Valley of the Moon and Marin Municipal Water Districts; Town of Windsor, California American Water – Larkfield District and Sonoma County Water Agency.
“We request all water users of the Sonoma-Marin Saving Water Partnership voluntarily reduce water use by 20 percent immediately due to the drought,” said Susan Harvey, chair of the WAC and Cotati City Council Member. “Reducing water use by 20 percent can be achieved by implementing some quick water saving tips, such as reducing outdoor water use and fixing leaks. We encourage our community to contact their water provider to learn more about water saving rebate programs and tips.”
The Partnership receives most of its water from the Russian River watershed which is currently experiencing drought conditions. Due to critically low rainfall over the last two years, water storage levels are at historic lows in both Lake Mendocino and Lake Sonoma. Most critical is Lake Mendocino currently at 42 percent of water supply storage capacity. Lake Sonoma’s water supply capacity is currently 61 percent, the lowest on record for this time of year.
