Santa Rosa City Council Adopts 20% Voluntary Community-wide Reduction in Water Use

City Requesting All Santa Rosans Reduce Water Use to Achieve a 20 Percent Community-wide Savings

In response to historic drought conditions in the North Bay, Santa Rosa, the largest California city north of Santa Francisco, is asking Santa Rosans to act now to reduce water use. This evening, the Santa Rosa City Council adopted a 20 percent voluntary community-wide reduction in water use, compared to 2020.

The Council action follows California Governor Gavin Newsom’s drought declaration for the Russian River Watershed and the Sonoma-Marin Saving Water Partnership’s request for a 20 percent region-wide reduction in water-use to prolong and preserve water supply.

"To achieve necessary water savings, we all need to take action now,” said Mayor Chris Rogers. “Changing simple habits, like reducing your irrigation run times and shortening showers can make a big difference and will help us to meet our community-wide water savings target.”

Santa Rosa Water is asking all residents to eliminate water waste and adopt water saving behaviors. Start by finding and fixing leaks, reducing outdoor irrigation, taking shorter showers, and turning off the water while brushing your teeth. If possible, make permanent changes, like converting lawn into low water use landscapes or replacing inefficient water fixtures with high efficiency devices. Santa Rosa Water offers water-saving tips, free devices (e.g. high efficiency showerheads), numerous rebates (e.g. lawn conversion), and more. For more information, visit srcity.org/WaterSmart

Santa Rosa Water is here to help customers save. In coordination with the Sonoma-Marin Saving Water Partnership, Santa Rosa Water will host a Drought Drop-By event on Saturday, June 12 at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in parking lot B (Corner of Brookwood Ave. and Bennett Valley Rd.) from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. At this Drought Drop-By, participants can pick-up a water-saving kit, that includes a bucket, high efficiency showerheads, faucet aerators, shower timer, and more. Additional details are provided at srcity.org/DroughtDropBy.
