[ARCHIVED] Cooling Center to Open, Excessive Heat Advisory Thru Sunday Night (7/11)

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the North Bay Valleys and is in effect from 12PM Friday, 7/9, through 11PM Sunday, 7/11. This advisory includes ALL of Santa Rosa. The NWS considers this a moderate heat risk event in the Santa Rosa area. An Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect for the same time period in the North Bay Mountains. Expect hot daytime temperatures and poor overnight humidity and temperature recoveries. Additionally, our region has experienced an increase in recent fire activity, and so the community is urged to avoid activities that could accidentally start a fire. Residents are also encouraged to be mindful of personal health during the heat:

  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Stay out of the sun,
  • Check up on relatives and neighbors who may need extra assistance.
  • Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
  • Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible.

Cooling Center to Open Saturday (7/10) and Sunday (7/11)
Due to the heightened weather conditions, the City of Santa Rosa will activate the following cooling center:

  • Steele Lane Community Center - 415 Steele Lane
  • Saturday (7/10/21) and Sunday (7/11/21) from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day
  • Masks will be required for all individuals at the cooling center, regardless of vaccination status
  • Residents should plan ahead for their visit:
    • Books, games, and laptops are allowed. 
    • For the experience of all residents, please bring and use headphones for listening. 
    • Free WiFi is available, but no broadcast television, and the ability to charge devices may be limited. 
    • Due to space limitations, please limit your personal items to one small tote and  daypack per person. 
    • Only service animals will be permitted inside of the cooling center. 
    • Please note that the City of Santa Rosa is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Statewide Flex Alert Issued for Friday (7/9), 4-9 p.m.
With extreme temperatures forecast across much of California on Friday (July 9), the California Independent System Operator (ISO is asking residents to voluntarily conserve electricity this afternoon and evening to help ease the strain on the grid during crucial evening hours when solar energy is diminished or no longer available. State energy experts are asking residents and businesses to use AC early in the day, pre-set thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, and avoid appliance use from 4-9 p.m.
