Community Asked to Add Their Words to New Public Art in Old Courthouse Square

Blessing Hancock Unum - Old Courthouse Square Public Art

Santa Rosa, CA – The City of Santa Rosa’s Public Art Program is excited to announce an opportunity for the public to submit words and phrases for Santa Rosa’s newest permanent public art piece located in Courthouse Square. These responses will be considered in the artist’s design that will be incorporated into the surface of the artwork, reflecting the community’s vision and dreams for the future of the City.

ENGAGEMENT GOALS:
The goal of this public engagement is to provide an inclusive and accessible opportunity for the people of Santa Rosa to share what they value in their communities. Courthouse Square’s future artwork, titled “Unum” by artist Blessing Hancock, will be made of stainless steel where words submitted through this opportunity will shine through the artwork during day and night. The signature component of this piece will be the collected responses through the survey that showcases the diversity within Santa Rosa that the community cherishes as core to the City’s identity.

HOW TO PARTCIPATE:
The people of Santa Rosa are invited to take the online survey to submit words and phrases for this public art project. Please go to this survey to add your voice to this project. Responses in any language are welcomed.

FINAL SELECTION:
After responses are collected, the project’s community advisory committee will recommend top responses for final approval by the Art in Public Places Committee for the artwork and popular responses to be translated into other languages spoken across Santa Rosa. This committee will also recommend to the Art in Public Places Committee that a land acknowledgement be included with the final installed artwork.
