Santa Rosa Seeks Input on Public Art Finalists for Fifth Street Parking Garage

Fifth Street Garage Public Art - three options

Santa Rosa, CA – The City of Santa Rosa seeks community input in the selection of one of three proposals for the Fifth Street Parking Garage Public Art Project. To achieve this, the City’s Public Art Program has posted a survey, where participants can also view the art and learn about the artists. Posters of the project finalists’ designs are on view at Beer Baron in downtown Santa Rosa and at the Fifth Street Parking Garage (735 Fifth Street).

PROJECT GOALS:
The primary goal of the project is to increase the visibility of the often overlooked Fifth Street Garage while enhancing the pedestrian experience. The art will improve the aesthetics of the garage and distinguish it from neighboring structures, serving as a creative wayfinding and identification element.

PROJECT BACKGROUND:
The Fifth Street Parking Garage is located on the north side of Fifth Street between Beaver and Orchard Streets in Downtown Santa Rosa. The proposed artwork designs are site-specific proposals for the southwest-facing exterior wall facing Orchard Street and Fifth Street. A call for artists was released in February 2021 seeking qualified Northern California based artists and artist teams.

FINAL SELECTION:
After the public survey results are received, a selection panel comprised of six people representing Downtown residents, downtown businesses, the Art in Public Places Committee, arts professionals, and the City’s Parking Division will review presentations from each artist or artist team, integrate the public survey results in their consideration, and ultimately recommend one proposal for approval by the Art in Public Places Committee. The three artists selected for consideration are Matthew Floriani, ELLE Streetart, and Rough Edge Collective (MJ Lindo-Lawyer and Joshua Lawyer). Each artist is from or is currently based in Sonoma County and expressed excitement about creating an artwork for a place that is considered home.
