[ARCHIVED] Wildfire Ready: Maintaining Your Preparedness

CC_09_16_21_Maintaining Your Preparedness

Wildfire seasons have been more destructive in recent years and have the potential to be longer in duration locally. The level of preparedness in our community has greatly improved at a personal and regional level in response to the changing conditions. Maintaining your own emergency plans and the efforts you’ve made around your home are critical as we move towards the fall season. By taking some basic steps, you can help prevent the spread of fire.

It is critical to maintain defensible space which includes the home’s ignition-free zone throughout the duration of fire season. The drought will likely continue to affect our vegetation and trees and has the potential to lead to increased leaf litter in yards and landscaping. Removing leaves, needles, and other yard litter from around your home, roof gutters, and decks can reduce the chances of an ember igniting a fire.

During a long fire season, it’s not uncommon to have regrowth of seasonal grasses. This year’s fire season was declared locally in Santa Rosa on May 17. As a reminder, property owners are required to maintain their properties in compliance with the City’s Weed Abatement ordinance for the duration of the fire season. This includes keeping weeds cut to 4 inches in height on undeveloped (vacant) parcels across Santa Rosa, and all parcels within the City’s wildland urban interface area.

Visit and visit the property owners resource library for tips on what you can do to maintain defensible space on your property throughout the duration of fire season and to review the City’s Weed Abatement Ordinance. You can also visit to ensure your emergency plans are kept current and updated.
