The City of Santa Rosa Public Art Program is excited to announce the installation of the Fifth Street Parking Garage Public Art Project in downtown Santa Rosa. The site-specific mural, titled Help each other grow, by Rough Edge Collective (MJ Lindo-Lawyer and Joshua Lawyer) broke ground on May 25 and is scheduled to be completed by June 8, 2022. A dedication ceremony will be announced soon.
PROJECT GOALS:
The primary goal of the project has been to increase the visibility of the often overlooked Fifth Street Garage while enhancing the pedestrian experience. The art will not only improve the aesthetics of the garage, it will distinguish it from neighboring structures, serving as a creative wayfinding and identification element.
PROJECT BACKGROUND:
The Fifth Street Parking Garage is located at 735 Fifth Street on the north side of Fifth Street between Beaver and Orchard Streets in downtown Santa Rosa. A call for artists was released in February 2021 seeking qualified Northern California based artists and artists teams.
FINAL SELECTION:
After a public survey and initial selection process, three finalists were identified and invited to submit design proposals. The Selection Panel ultimately chose work by Rough Edge Collective (MJ Lindo-Lawyer and Joshua Lawyer) for this site-specific project. The Selection Panel was comprised of six people representing downtown residents, downtown businesses, the Art in Public Places Committee, arts professionals, and the City’s Parking Division.
