Excessive Heat Watch Upgraded to Excessive Heat Warning from 11 a.m. Saturday (9/3) through 8 p.m. Thursday (9/8)

A Moderate to High-Risk Event is forecasted for this holiday weekend. The National Weather Service has upgraded the Excessive Heat Watch to an Excessive Heat Warning and the time frame has been extended through Thursday evening.

* WHAT: Dangerously hot conditions with temperatures in the upper 90s up to 110 possible, particularly across the interior valleys. Overnight temperatures will only cool into the 60s in lower elevations and 70s to 80s in the higher terrain.
* WHERE: The entire San Francisco Bay Area and Central Coast, including ALL of Santa Rosa.
* WHEN: From 11 a.m. Saturday (9/3) through 8 p.m. Thursday (9/8)
* IMPACTS: Extreme heat will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly those working or participating in outdoor activities.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS: Onshore winds and marine influences from the Pacific Ocean may limit daytime heating near the coast with afternoon highs in the 70s to 80s, ultimately reducing heat-related risks.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS:

• The City plans to open a cooling center; details on the cooling center can be found here.
• The City of Santa Rosa will continue to monitor the forecast and provide updates. Although not activated as official cooling centers at this time, Finley and Steele Lane community centers will be open during the day this week through Friday for residents to find relief from the warm daytime temperatures. Hours of operation for each facility are as follows:
  • Finley Community Center: 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.
  • Steele Lane Community Center: 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
• Be prepared to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
• Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles, under any circumstances, especially during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in minutes.
