[ARCHIVED] Highway 101 Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing Design Updates

News Flash_Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing Rendering

Updated bridge designs for the City of Santa Rosa’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing spanning Highway 101 will be presented to the City’s Design Review Board on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2022 at 4:30 p.m. before the final design enters the construction phase.

The updated designs are based on the Design Review Boards direction provided during the preliminary bridge design review on Nov. 4, 2021. During the Nov. 4 presentation, the Board described the overall design as clean and elegant and requested that the design for specific project elements, including fencing, railing, and the proposed eastern touchdown landing be refined and presented for review.

The community is encouraged to attend and provide comments on the design updates during the meeting on Dec. 1, 2022 at 4:30 p.m. Visit SRCity.org/BikePedOvercossing for meeting details.

The final design for the Highway 101 Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing is expected to be completed in Fall/Winter 2023, with construction anticipated to begin in spring 2024.

The project will construct a 14.5-foot-wide bicycle and pedestrian shared-use crossing spanning Highway 101 at the Elliot-Edwards alignment approved by Caltrans. It will serve as a connector providing a safer and more comfortable alternative for bicyclists and pedestrians over the freeway between two high-traffic interchanges at College Avenue and Steele Lane. The crossing is a critical link in the east-west bicycle and pedestrian network identified in the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan Update 2018.

The cable-stayed, asymmetrical single-pylon bridge design will provide a truly unique and memorable focal point for Santa Rosa, serving as a connector and providing a safer and more comfortable alternative for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Visit SRCity.org/BikePedOvercossing for additional project information.
