Bike Rack Parking Expansion in the Downtown Area and Parks

Bike Rack Parking Expansion

The City of Santa Rosa Transportation and Public Works Traffic Engineering team is in the process of installing 120 new bike racks around the City, primarily within the downtown business district. Installation of the new galvanized inverted -U bike racks with square tubing is currently underway and is expected to be completed in Fall 2023.

While several of the 120 new bike racks will be installed in various City parks, most of the bike racks will be installed within the downtown business district including Railroad Square. The new bike racks are being installed within the public right-of-way or on City-owned facilities that are accessible to the public, in highly visible, well-lit areas within view of pedestrian traffic and within fifty feet of a building entrance.

The City’s Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan Update 2018 (BPMPU), Adopted by City Council in 2019, identified additional bike parking, a place to safely secure bikes, as one of the highest prioritized improvements, by community members, to creating a reliable, multi-modal network that meets the needs of all people of all ages and abilities. The BPMPU has a goal to double the number of short-term bicycle parking locations within the City by 2040.

Request a Bike Rack

Residents may request bike rack locations by visiting the Biking and Walking webpage, then completing the online bike rack request form. The City will install bike racks within the public right-of-way in commercial districts, parks, and other City-owned property. The City does not install racks on residential streets or private property.

Funding

The bike rack parking expansion is thanks to a $33,290 grant from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) Transportation for Clean Air (TFCA) that was administered through Sonoma County Transportation Authority. The City allocated and additional $4,290 bringing the total project funding to $37,580.
