New Emergency Generator to Improve City’s Resiliency

NF_PSB Replacement Generator

The City of Santa Rosa Public Safety Building (PSB), located at 955 & 965 Sonoma Avenue, is a 55,000 square foot, 2‐story building, built in 1980. The building houses City of Santa Rosa Fire Station No. 1 and the Police Department’s essential services.  In 2019, an analysis was performed on the existing generator, and it was determined inadequate to sustain emergency operations during an extended power outage, such as Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS).

City Council approved replacement of the existing generator through a Design-Build contract with Western Machinery Electric. This method expedites the project delivery, which can also reduce project costs. The project was completed May 2023 and the new replacement generator will power up more systems in the PSB during an extended power outage.

The Emergency Generator Replacement project is part of our larger and ongoing efforts to harden the City’s critical infrastructure against potential future hazards and is funded in part by a grant secured from the California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), Community Power Resilience Grant.
