Construction is underway on the City’s first two-way protected bicycle lanes, also known as cycle tracks, along Armory Drive and a section of Santa Rosa Avenue.  The new two-way protected bike lanes along Armory Drive, between Elliott Avenue and Ridgeway Avenue, will help connect the community to the future Highway 101 Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing.

Plans are also in place to install a two-way protected bike lane along a section of Santa Rosa Avenue between First Street and Sonoma Avenue. This section of protected bike lanes will help improve cyclists’ transition when exiting the Prince Memorial Greenway and connecting to the existing bike lane network. The two-way protected bike lanes project is underway and expected to be completed in fall 2023.

Two-way protected bicycle lanes allow bicycle movement in both directions on one side of the road, reducing potential conflict points between cars and bikes. Two-way protected bicycle lanes also have a wider appeal than traditional bike lanes as their physical protection enhances cyclists comfort level, thereby attracting more riders.

Funding for the two-way protected bike lanes is through a $76,887 grant from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) Transportation for Clean Air (TFCA) administered through Sonoma County Transportation Authority (SCTA). The City allocated an additional $23,113 to the project.
