Santa Rosa Fire Department Awarded $7.08M Grant to Fund Additional Staffing

NF - SAFER Grant group of fire fighters

The City of Santa Rosa Fire Department has been awarded a $7.08 million Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) SAFER Grant program is specially designed to bolster the capabilities of local fire departments, equipping them with the necessary resources to respond effectively to emergencies. Santa Rosa’s successful grant application is a testament to the City's commitment to providing exemplary emergency services to our community.

The grant allocates $2.36M per year to provide 12 additional firefighter-paramedics to staff two advanced life support squads during peak hours over the course of a three-year period of performance. These two-person squads will be housed at the existing Santa Rosa Fire Department facilities. The squads will respond to emergency medical calls for service and fire-related events to improve response times. Also, it helps ensure the ability to comply with NFPA 1710 - the National Fire Protection Association standard that specifies requirements for effective and efficient organization and deployment of fire suppression operations, emergency medical operations, and special operations to the public by career fire departments to protect the community and the occupational safety and health of fire department employees.

During off-peak hours, the personnel from the squads will then be assigned to four outlying fire stations. These stations are typically staffed with three-person crews assigned to engine companies. To improve compliance with NFPA 1710, providing the fourth person on the engine will allow them to respond and take action quicker for emergencies that would normally require the response of an additional engine company from a farther distance away. In advance of the grant award, the Fire Department has been proactively working on an implementation plan and will continue planning efforts to add these vital additional resources with new staffing by March 2024.
