Construction started this week on the $4.4M Sonoma Avenue Pavement Rehabilitation Project from E Street to Bobelaine Drive with Ghilotti Bros. Inc. of San Rafael, California. This infrastructure project is funded in part by California Senate Bill 1 (SB1) Road Repair and Accountability Act.
This section of Sonoma Avenue was originally constructed in 1966 and has not been rehabilitated in over 30 years. As a result, it is experiencing failing and deteriorating pavement conditions which requires continual maintenance and repairs.
Construction on this project will include grinding out sections of failed pavement along the 0.9-mile section of roadway, followed by a hot mixed asphalt overlay. Existing Class II bike lanes will be maintained and pedestrian curb ramps will be reconstructed to current ADA standards. Approximately 75 Water services within the project limits will be replaced to prevent future cuts in the new pavement.
Work began this week with mobilization and site preparation work, to be followed by water service replacement and pedestrian curb ramp upgrade work that is expected to start mid-November. The hot mixed asphalt pavement rehabilitation work is anticipated to begin in March 2024, weather pending, with project completion expected in April 2024.
Expect delays along this section of Sonoma Avenue as crews work to complete this critical infrastructure project. As always, remember to drive with caution near the construction area and watch for signage and flaggers.
