[ARCHIVED] New Scuplture to be Installed on 5th Street

Recycled Parking Meters

The City of Santa Rosa Public Art Program is excited to announce the installation of the Meter Made Public Art Project on 5th Street in downtown Santa Rosa. “Tower” is a sculpture created by Dana Woodman/Built By BIG, LLC and will be located at 540 5th Street. The Public Art Program issued a call for artists in 2016 seeking an artist to create a large-scale sculpture using recycled parking meters. After several delays, installation of the sculpture is scheduled to begin July 15th.
The Public Art Program collaborated with the Parking Division to commission this project. Over the years, the City of Santa Rosa amassed a collection parking meters and meter parts that have been “retired” from active service from the Downtown parking district. Goals for the public art project included encouraging the creative reuse of parking meters, offering artists the opportunity to create artwork out of unusual materials, and enlivening a City parking lot with large-scale sculpture that will be experienced by pedestrians as well as those using the parking lot.
A Request for Qualifications was published on July 7, 2016. Qualifications were presented to a Selection Panel, consisting of artists, curators, downtown merchants, Art in Public Places Committee members and involved City departments. The panel identified a short list of artists, based on the following criteria: artistic excellence and originality; appropriateness of the artist’s medium and style as related to project goals; and experience with projects of similar scope and scale. Selected finalists were: Adriane Litman, Arnold Martin, Dana Woodman/Built by BIG, LLC, Mark Szulgit, and Patrick Amiot. Each finalist presented a specific proposal to the Selection Panel, who then selected Dana Woodman/Built By BIG, LLC to complete the project. The Art in Public Places Committee approved this selection on August 29, 2016.
The project budget is $18,000 allocated from the Public Art Fund and the Parking District and included all artist fees, and all expenses related to design development, including engineering, fabrication, travel, transportation and installation of the artwork, insurance, and all other project related expenses.
