The City Clerk’s Office has introduced a new public records portal called NextRequest, which provides the community with the ability to look up any public records request previously submitted by a member of the public or make their own new records request online.
NextRequest is a transparency portal for streamlining the California Public Records Act, Govt. Code § 6250 et. seq., requests and releasing public records. The City recognizes that Public Records Requests are a very important function of government accountability, and the NextRequest portal gives citizens unprecedented insight into public records requests submitted to the City and places a searchable archive of responsive documents at their fingertips.
Approximately 400 multi-department requests are made to the City of Santa Rosa annually, and the number of requests continues to increase each year. Visitors to the site will have access to responsive documents that have been released, like the "release to one, release to all" policy being piloted for the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request at the Federal government level. This policy ensures that once a government document has been made public once, anyone will have access to it.
Finally, in addition to providing better direct community access to City records, the new online system will also improve efficiencies in the City’s ability to provide records.
