[ARCHIVED] HAWK Crosswalk Signal

HAWK Crosswalk Signal News Flash - TPW

On May 8, a HAWK (High-intensity Activated CrossWalK) signal was energized at the intersection of Mendocino Avenue and McConnell Avenue near Santa Rosa Junior College.

A HAWK signal is a traffic control device designed to aid pedestrians when crossing at a mid-block crosswalk. Unlike conventional traffic control signals, the HAWK is only operational when activated by a pedestrian. Until the HAWK signal is activated, it rests in a dark state allowing normal traffic flow. In its resting state, the HAWK displays a constant “Don’t Walk” indication for pedestrian crossing until activated by a pedestrian.

When a pedestrian presses the button, approaching drivers will see a flashing yellow signal, then a solid yellow indicating they should reduce their speed and prepare to stop. A solid red signal indicates drivers must stop. Once the dual red lights begin to alternately flash, vehicles must stop, but may proceed when there are no pedestrians in the crosswalk.

The first HAWK crosswalk signal was installed in 2014 as a pilot program on Montgomery Drive across from Spring Lake Village.
