[ARCHIVED] Downtown Area Sidewalk Repair

Sidewalk Repair

Everyone uses sidewalks at some point, whether walking is their primary mode of transportation or not: Drivers walk on them to and from their cars, transit riders travel on them to their stops and stations, cyclists lock up their bikes and walk to their destination on them.

In partnership with the Downtown Community Benefit District, the City is initiating a pilot program designed to improve walkability and access ability in high use pedestrian areas such as the downtown core and railroad square. The program will survey and map minor sidewalk lifts under two-inches in height, then remove the lift using edge-to-edge saw-cutting technology leaving a tapered, textured finish. Once a raised sidewalk within the correct parameters is identified Saw-cutting typically takes 20-30 minutes. Pedestrian traffic may be temporarily re-routed during repairs. Work will be conducted Monday – Friday, 8AM-3PM with survey inspections anticipated to begin in early October and repair work to follow.

When the completed pilot program is deemed successful and funding is available, additional high-density pedestrian areas of the City may receive similar minor sidewalk repairs.

Maintaining and replacing sidewalks is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner. However, the city currently repairs sidewalk lifts by applying an asphalt patch; to report a raised sidewalk please call 707-543-3881.

Whenever possible, the city optimizes funding by combining sidewalk maintenance projects with infrastructure construction work. In Summer 2018, the City received grant funding from the Caltrans Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) to install 100 crosswalks in 90 days. Several of the crosswalk enhancements included the installation of ADA compliant curb ramps and traffic calming devices such as sidewalk bulb-outs and raised pedestrian refuge islands.
