Santa Rosa Declares Local Emergency to Safeguard the Community Against the Coronavirus

Santa Rosa, CA – The City of Santa Rosa proclaimed the existence of a local state of emergency on Monday, March 2, 2020 in an effort to proactively prepare a response against the potential spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The declaration provides a valuable opportunity for the City to mobilize resources, accelerate emergency planning, streamline staffing, facilitate inter-agency coordination, and allow for potential future reimbursement by the state and federal governments.

“While we know of two confirmed coronavirus patients in Sonoma County at this time, the situation is evolving, and it is important that we make it a priority to work with our public health agency partners to prevent the spread of the virus and be prepare to respond to community needs should the virus spread,” said City Manager Sean McGlynn. “Santa Rosa will be taking a common-sense, proactive approach to prioritize the health and safety of our community.”

The local emergency proclamation will be presented to Santa Rosa City Council for ratification at the Council meeting scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at 4:00 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers (100 Santa Rosa Avenue, Santa Rosa).

The City continues to work closely with the Sonoma County Department of Health Services, who is working with other Bay Area health departments, the California Department of Public Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to monitor COVID-19.

Community members should take precautions to reduce the spread of the virus, and especially to protect those who are most vulnerable – precautions include:

  • Washing hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Avoid touching your eyes and face
  • Coughing or sneezing into your sleeved elbow
  • Staying home when ill
