Iris Harrell is a resident of Oakmont Village in Santa Rosa since January 2016. She and her wife Ann Benson have been together for 43 years.

Iris is a retired design/build general contractor from Silicon Valley. She was the founder of Harrell Remodeling (also Harrell Design/Build), a residential full-service design and construction company. After 30 years, she retired and sold the company to her 40 employees as a 100% employee-owned ESOP. They continue to grow and have been very successful. Her remodeling firm specialized in green design/build practices and ADA Aging in Place design features, coining the phrase “the Forever Home.”

In her prior life, Iris was a high school teacher in Richmond, Virginia and Rough Rock, Arizona on the Navajo reservation. Iris also founded a music group called Shiraz and traveled with the band on the road for 5 years.

In Dallas, Texas, Iris served as a nonprofit Regional Director for Women in Community Service in as well as an administrator for American Arbitration Association.

In Santa Rosa’s Oakmont senior community of 4700 people, she served for 6 years as the first Chair of the Building Construction Committee, which led the improvements of the publicly shared facilities in Oakmont. She has also been Chair and co-founder of the Oakmont Firewise Resource Committee, which has focused on helping homeowners make themselves and their properties become more prepared for reoccurring wildfires. 

She currently serves as on the Oakmont HOA Board of Directors. She has served on the Fountaingrove Club Board until recently and helped lead the Steering Committee to rebuild the Fountaingrove Clubhouse that burned down in the 2017 wildfires.

Iris loves living in Santa Rosa and has done full-time, active volunteer work since she retired from Harrell Remodeling. She and her wife Ann have a folk music quartet called More Joy.
